About Me
I am an elementary teacher. I teach second grade in a district
located in the Greater Pittsburgh Area. This is my 7th year of teaching,
6th year in my current district.
I received my undergraduate degree in Education at Indiana University
of Pennsylvania. I have also completed my Master of Education degree
through Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania. The focus of my
Applied Master's Portfolio was the Achievement Gap and was given the
designation of Outstanding with Merit. As per the program goal,
"Becoming a Change Agent," I have continued my focus on the
Achievement Gap through participation in our County-wide Professional
Development as a presenter.
This year, I will be presenting/collaborating with 30 teachers for a
whole day of training. My workshop will be in the east, secondary
location, Gateway Senior High School, Monroeville, Pennsylvania.
I have also continued to focus on the Achievement Gap by collaborating
with community residents and leaders in a community-based initiative..
Through this initiative, a program was born called the RAMP Program.
RAMP stands for "Raising Achievement in Monroeville and Pitcairn."
The idea of this initiative is to coordinate and develop a network of
support systems that will aid area students in academic achievement.
This initiative engages local non-profit organizations, churches, parents
and residents, local businesses and school related individuals or groups
in a collaborative effort to raise achievement for all students, but
focuses on disadvantaged subgroups, such as our African-American
population.
I am dedicated to research and positive change related to the
Achievement Gap because I was a Gap student myself. And for
many years, I watched friends, and relatives fall into the Gap. As a
result, the difficulties they faced, in turn, PERPETUATED some of
the factors that CAUSE the Gap.
We, my family and friends, have always known and been impacted
by the Achievement Gap factors, but until the No Child Left Behind
Act (NCLB), the problem did not have a name, and was not widely
studied.
Along with the Act, came the accountability that forced the
problem to have a name, and therefore, measures put into place to
study, and address the Gap. As an educator, I have made it my
mission to address the Gap and affect change.
This change is a collaborative effort. Any and all input you have
would be helpful and appreciated. So, if you desire, please contact
me from the Contact Me page with any resources, or comments
you feel can help to affect positive change in this area.
Thank you for your participation, support, interest, and input.
